House Bill 7017: AN ACT CONCERNING STUDENT DATA PRIVACY
There is a critical need for data privacy protections for CT students, families and teachers. The Coalition worked with CT State Reps to propose data privacy bills this session. The Education Committee raised only one-HB 7017. The bill was a good start but did not go far enough. CPRC called for and offered amendments that would give meaningful protections. But, the Education Committee did not further these. Instead, the CT Education Committee, proposed amendments that put children, families and teachers in more danger, while promoting lobbyists’ interests. The Coalition then called for the Education Committee to “Kill the Bill”.
With the help of CT Media and CT parents, the legislators have heard our voices!
As of close of the regular legislative session on June 3, 2015- HB 7017 was not raised for vote and has effectively, “died” It is now possible for HB 7017 to come up in the legislative “Special Session” and CPRC will be vigilantly watching for it. In the bill’s current state the CPRC position remains- “Kill the Bill”
CPRC continues to call on CT Legislation to: 1) Act within their charge 2) Keep commercial interests away from our children 3) Actually protect students, teachers and families
CPRC is the union of 11 citizen groups throughout CT, representing approximately 40,000 CT residents. The Coalition has worked with legislators by submitting research, evidence and expert counsel. We are committed to the safety of children and the rights of parents.
